Stop writing to the device
Do not keep saving files, reformatting, running random repair tools, or copying new files onto the device. If files were deleted, formatted, or hidden by corruption, new writes can overwrite the same space you are trying to recover.
Listen and look for physical failure signs
Clicking, grinding, repeated disconnects, extreme heat, burning smell, or a drive that spins up and disappears are warning signs. For those cases, repeated power cycles can make damage worse.
Make a clone before deep repair attempts
The safer path is often to clone the drive or card first, then attempt recovery from the clone. That keeps the original from being stressed during scans and experiments.
If you have a hard drive, USB drive, SD card, phone card, or external drive acting strange, send the device type, what happened, and what files matter most.
